Bollywood - A quick glance on world’s largest film industry

Due to the large scale budget and wide publicity, Hollywood is often considered as the capital of movies. But the truth is that, in terms of number of movies produced and also in terms of viewer ship, Bollywood, based in Bombay (now renamed as Mumbai) is more eligible for such a title. A stunning figure of more than 800 movies comes out of this film industry every year. Hindi, the most prominent language in India, is the language used in Bollywood cinema. In fact, what was actually known as Hindi cinema or was later renamed into Bollywood.

The format of most of the movies coming out of Bollywood is the same. Boy meets girl, they fall in love, complications, the villain’s intervention, fights, music and dance; this is the summarization of a normal Bollywood cinema. The duration of the movies are usually anywhere between two and a half hours to four hours. There will usually be elaborate sequences of dance and music (at least five) through the films.

Bollywood music is something worth talking about. There are many noted musicians who work as music composers for Hindi movies on a regular basis. Some of the prominent names in Bollywood music are A R Rahman (who won an Academy award recently), Pritam, the trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Anu Malik, Salim-Sulaiman etc.

The popularity of Hindi movies is not only confined in India per se. Hindi movies are screened and watched in most countries of the world, mainly due to the existence of a wide Indian Diaspora. In recent years there have been many crossovers of cinematic talent both from Hollywood and Bollywood. Technicians and actors from one industry go and work in the other and find recognition.  Hindi movies or Bollywood movie is fast changing these days with its global exposure. Directors, technicians and actors are trying to experiment on new genres and divert from the clichéd Bollywood format.
